Lafeber Company was built by a father-son team of veterinarians with a shared love of animals and a special passion for birds.  Dr. T.J. Lafeber developed the very first commercial bird food pellet in the back room of his veterinary clinic in the early 1970s.  Today, their recipes are developed by his son, Dr. Ted Lafeber, III, along with top veterinarians and nutritionists.

Most “pellets” are actually extruded which requires 100% gelatinization of the starches (the starches melt), the ingredients are heated to 250 to 275 degrees and then must be cooked for approximately 20 minutes.  Extruded foods generally need 20% to 30% supplemented nutrients due to loss as compared to only a 10% loss during pelleting.  Lafeber prefers pelleting because a higher-quality product is achieved.  Pelleting is a gentler food process and the ingredients only reach a temperature of around 165 degrees before being cooled. 

Lafeber's pellets are free of artificial food colours & dyes, Omega 3 & 6 balanced, naturally preserved, naturally flavoured and Non-GMO.  The softer texture is also preferred by most Parrot making Lafeber pellets a better choice when converting to a formulated diet.
