Parrot owners often ask how best to bathe their Parrots.  The truth is that there is no one answer that works for all Parrots, but there are a few things to try.

Every Parrot has their own personality, so every Parrot will display unique characteristics in regards to grooming.  Many Parrots will bathe themselves in a shallow dish, either in or out of the cage; some enjoy taking showers with their owners, or in some cases, resist water contact altogether.  The behaviour of your Parrot will ultimately reflect on what grooming methods you can choose that works.

Once a method is chosen there are some rules you should become accustomed to when bathing your pet Parrot.

The Rules of Bathing

Using only plain, clean water is the best and the safest way to bathe your Parrot.
• If using a shampoo, choose one most appropriate for your species of Parrot.  Quality shampoos will help restore the natural PH balance without harming the feather oil while removing unnatural debris such as newsprint.
• If using a mister, never aim directly at your Parrot but allow them move into the line of spray voluntarily.
• When using a shower perch, try aiming the spray on the wall rather than directly on your Parrot.  This will provide a gentler spray and also allow them to move away should they not enjoy it.
• Give your Parrot at least an hour to preen and dry after a bath. Morning baths or showers are best and avoid baths immediately before bedtime.
• In the wild, Parrots typically bathe in fresh streams of cold water.  We have found that most companion Parrots also prefer cold water baths and only a few prefer lukewarm or room temperature water.
• Try to bathe your Parrot at least 3 times a week.
