Those of us that are lucky enough to be owned by a small bird know that they are big personalities and brains in tiny bodies. Budgies, Cockatiels, Lovebirds, and all their small feathered kin spend just as much time looking for enough food to satisfy their lightning fast metabolisms as their larger counterparts. There was a time when small bird owners had to settle with spray millet holders in variety of configurations while larger birds got fancy wheels to turn, buttons to press, drawers to pull, and countless shreddables.

Times have changed, and there are now a variety of options available for the discerning small bird owner. Stuffable Baskets and boxes, Hide-a-treat cups with lids, mini piñatas and treasure chests abound with opportunities. Don't overestimate the power of your own imagination as well. Think about the natural feeding methods of your individual species. Providing "rock trays" or "foraging carpets" (pictured) works with food sprinkled and will keep ground foraging birds coming back for more. Filling ice cube trays with shredded paper and a few choice morsels are a big hit as well. Stuffing existing toys with food or wrapping pellets or healthy treats with paper and placing in the food dish will allow your bird to work for his supper, the way nature intended. These fun activities provide essential environmental enrichment, and have become one of the most important things we can do to care for our birds.
