We often get asked what is necessary to take your Parrot on a vacation across international borders, most frequently the US border.  If you are traveling (visiting) and returning back home to Canada, there is a Certificate of Ownership (also known as a Pet Passport) which you can use.  This document allows multiple border crossings, similar to a people passport, valid for 3 years and is easy to renew.  The application form is available on the Environment Canada website link below.

Leaving Canada with your Parrot

You will need to plan at least 60 days in advance to ensure you have all the proper documents.  The normal processing time is 40 days providing all forms have been completed correctly.  Since all Parrots are classified under Appendix I or II of CITES endangered species list you must have a Pet Passport to cross the border.  The application for a Pet Passport, issued by CITES through Environment Canada can be found online at this link http://ec.gc.ca/cites/default.asp?lang=En&n=0A2E00D5-1.

Several countries, including the United States require documentation for proof of health.  Shortly before leaving, make an appointment with your Veterinarian and obtain documented proof of health.  Please check the specific requirements for the country that you plan to visit.

Prior to leaving Canada, you must go into the office of the Canada Border Services Agency (at the border or airport) and have the Pet Passport stamped.  This is an important step as it assures the border officials at the country you are visiting that you have permission to bring the endangered species out of Canada.

Entrance into United States

If you are traveling to the United States, you will need to schedule an appointment the week prior to your departure with US Fish & Wildlife at the border where you plan to cross.  These appointments are only available during the week.  On the day that you cross the border, an officer from the US Fish and Wildlife department will meet you to inspect your documentation.  In addition to having a Pet Passport, you will also be required to show the proof of health from your veterinarian dated within the past 30 days.  This border inspection has a fee of approximately $150 per bird payable at the time of inspection.  You will then be asked to visit the US border veterinarian who will visually inspect all birds for a fee of approximately $25.  Also be aware that several US States do not allow Quaker (Monk) Parakeets and some States will euthanize the birds that are confiscated.  Plan your trip accordingly if you must take your Quaker into the United States.

Upon your return to Canada, you do not need to stop at the US Border Control since your Pet Passport was issued in Canada and you are not exporting a Parrot from the United States.

Returning to Canada with your Parrot

Aside from having a valid Pet Passport, the Canada Border Services Agency requires your declaration that your Parrot has been in your possession for 90 days.  Your Parrot must be found to be healthy when inspected at the border.  Have your veterinary proof of health document available in case it is required.

Every country have their own laws that govern endangered species.  Please visit their website for specific requirements as well as contacting the local consulate or embassy to ensure you can bring your Parrot into their country and have all necessary documentation.
