Adopt aParrot

Why do Parrots end up in shelters?

Parrots are often acquired before getting any information about their care and social needs and consequently do not meet the owner’s expectation.

Many stores and some breeders make it too easy to purchase a Parrot and do not provide follow-up support.  This is a set up for failure for the many people inexperienced with birds.

The new Parrot owner is not prepared for the high cost and commitment of keeping and caring for a Parrot.

Many have no idea how to interact with a bird.  Within a short time they have trained their Parrot to bite, scream and be completely unsociable.

The best of caregivers may have an unfortunate change in their life that requires them to give away their well cared for Parrot.

What can you do to help the Parrots in shelters?

If you are considering adding to your flock, then adopting from a registered shelter is a viable option.

If you do not want the long term commitment but still have room for another Parrot, you can offer your time and home to foster a Parrot waiting to be adopted.

If you are not adding a bird to your home, you can offer your time and expertise by helping out with administrative functions, donate items or services to help raise funds, offer discounts for your products or services, or provide assistance when birds are being relocating.

You can donate your Parrotdise Perch loyalty points to any of the shelters we support.

If you are referred to Parrotdise Perch by one of the shelters they automatically receive 50 loyalty points.

What can you do to prevent your Parrot from ending up in a shelter?

If you have little experience with Parrots and simply do not want a mature bird, choose a breeder that is willing to share their knowledge with you.  Do your homework and choose the right species for your lifestyle.

Share your experience with someone who knows about Parrots or don’t be afraid to ask for help.  Remember that shelters also educate.

Learn how to communicate with your Parrot.

Learn how to use force-free training to keep your Parrot safe and enriched.

Have a plan for your Parrot’s future.  Whether or not you choose a species that may outlive you, include a provision for their care in your will.

How to choose the right shelter to support?

Professional Parrot shelters are registered as Not for Profit (NFP) organizations with the federal government.  They will have their NFP registration number available on their website or upon request.

Start your search in your local area.  Nearly every province has a well operated registered Parrot shelter.  You can offer more to your local shelter over the years then a shelter located out of province or out of the country.

Ensure the shelter’s goal is to rehabilitate and rehome birds and educate Parrot owners.

We support many different fund raisers for these shelters.

We have classes specifically for improving the relationship you have with your Parrot.

We continue to research and add blogs about caring for Parrots on our website.

We require our staff to attend an in depth behaviour class Living & Learning with Parrots and read Don’t Shoot the Dog, the bible on positive reinforcement training, as well as participate in our classes on behaviour modification.

We offer in-store consultation for anyone experiencing behaviour or other problems with their Parrot.

We offer over-the-phone consultation for existing customers who may experience behaviour or other problems with their Parrot.

We will, by appointment and a consultation fee, do in-home visits to work with your family and improve the relationship you have with your Parrot.

We provide the names of bird behaviourist who will for a fee offer their services to help you improve the relationship you have with your Parrot.

We take the time to talk about the pros and cons of keeping Parrots as pets to prospective bird owners who expect to purchase one in our store and more importantly how to go about making the right decision.

We suggest contacting the local shelter and when that is clearly not an option, offer to provide prospective bird owners with the names of breeders for the species of Parrot they choose.

We offer an ongoing discount to anyone that fosters a Parrot from a shelter that we support.

We offer a “start-up” discount for the purchase of a new cage, food and toys when someone adopts a Parrot from a shelter that we support.

We offer a discount to anyone wanting to donate cages, toys or food to a shelter that we support.

What do you do when all else fails?

Responsible shelters will do their best to help keep Parrots in their existing home when the pet owner experiences a temporary crisis.  At the very least, they will be able to offer foster care while the pet owner recovers from a health or financial mishap.

If you are anticipating a life change, such as retirement, that does not include your Parrots, we suggest you get to know your local shelter or better, allow them to get to know you and what you want for your birds.  When the time comes, they will be better informed about the best future for your Parrots.

Above all, consider what is best for your Parrot when making a difficult decision about its future.  The shelters we support are doing just that and very understanding should you ever need their support.
